iBET predicts the EURO 2020 Results
The EURO 2020 championships are off to an exciting start as the tournament approaches the end of the group stages. Things are going to get even more exciting as the tournament progresses to the Round of 16, but what is most exciting is predicting which country will ultimately bring home the Henri Delaunay trophy.
Find out more about the countries who are favourites to win the tournament, the underdogs, and who will be the ultimate champion of the tournament.
After having a victorious 1-0 win over Germany during their first match day, France have been, and still are considered the favourites to win the tournament. With their chances of being crowned champions set at 20.5%.
Should they do so, this will then make them the fourth team alongside West Germany, Spain, and France themselves in 1998 and 2002 to win back-to-back World Cup and European Championship (2018 FIFA World Cup, 2020 UEFA Euro)
And a further breakdown of their chances follow as such:
‧ Reach Quarter-finals (69.8%)
‧ Reach Semi-finals (48.6%)
‧ Reach Finals (32.9%)
‧ Win Euro 2020 (20.5%)
This might not come as such a big surprise as Les Bleus currently have a strong lineup with the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann, Karim Benzema, and Hugo Lloris. And under the leadership of coach, Didier Deschamps, the conditions will certainly be in their favour to become the victors of Group F, also known as the group of death – comprising of rivals Germany, Portugal, and Hungary.
Speaking of Hungary, their setback of coming from behind to reach a 1-1 draw with The Mighty Magyars, shows not only the prowess of the Hungarian team, but also a display of the French squad’s abilities to equalise the damages of a disadvantageous situation. With their final match against Portugal being a much anticipated one.
And it is no wonder that Les Bleus are on the top of every bookie’s list.
Currently ranked No.1 on the FIFA World Rankings, hopes are high for the Belgian squad to achieve the glory of being crowned champions. The latest lineup boasts talented individuals such as Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, plus Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld in defence.
Some might argue that the average age of the squad could be a liability. But in a tournament where you only need to be at your best for four to five weeks, this argument can be easily refuted. What matters more is the combined experience and skillset of the players. The Red Devils will certainly be doing everything in their power to make their golden generation count.
With only three competitive losses under the leadership of Roberto Martinez, it is a staggering record which attests to the Belgian squad’s impeccable strength.
And here is the breakdown of their odds in the tournament:
‧ Reach Quarter-finals (67.3%)
‧ Reach Semi-finals (45.8%)
‧ Reach Finals (26.1%)
‧ Win Euro 2020 (17.9%)
Belgium are the next favourites after France to win the tournament with a 17.9% chance. Which is no surprise since their immensely talented squad displayed an excellent qualification campaign of 10 wins from 10.
Despite the Three Lions’ draw with Scotland, it can be argued that England has gotten what they need to advance themselves in the tournament, as not every match has to be a win to advance from the group stages, giving them more breathing room to plan ahead for the round of 16.
England has certainly improved themselves since the previous Euros, but will be looking to keep their game sharp for the further rounds ahead. Also, these are England’s chances for the tournament:
‧ Reach Quarter-finals (54.6%)
‧ Reach Semi-finals (37.5%)
‧ Reach Finals (23.2%)
‧ Win Euro 2020 (8.5%)
With talented players such as Jordan Henderson and Harry Maguire returning to peak fitness, and a newfound synergy within the squad, promoting balance and harmony within. Another emerging name is Kalvin Phillips, the midfielder who played remarkably well against Croatia. Expectations will be high of the midfielder in the latter stages of their campaign.
But a notable aspect of the Three Lions is the lack of a saviour. We’ve seen the likes of Wayne Rooney and David Beckham in the past, however, since their knight in shining armour is nowhere to be found, the load is shared equally among the squad.
England’s top group F finish means they will face Germany in the round of 16 opener. To many it may sound like an unfavourable situation but, if they are able to eliminate one of the many big threats in the early stages of the tournament, this will no doubt give them the confidence boost needed to see them through to the end.
Unlike the English squad, Euro 2016 winners Portugal are best known for their star player Cristiano Ronaldo, and the Portuguese side are looking to make it two consecutive Euro wins.
Add a selection of excellent players such as Ruben Dias, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and Diogo Jota; who are all coming on the back of outstanding seasons for their respective clubs, the Portuguese squad are looking more than capable of bringing the challenge to the top.
Why? Because when Cristiano Ronaldo was subbed off in the Euro 2016 final, many wrote them off thinking that Portugal would be unable to win it. However, in a display of excellent teamwork and playmaking, they went on to win the final and prove that the squad does not rely heavily on any one player to get the job done.
They may not be the most exciting team to watch, but what matters most is doing what needs to be done to win the tournament. And right now, this is what the Portuguese squad is great at.
Here are the odds for Portugal’s squad:
‧ Reach Quarter-finals (32.7%)
‧ Reach Semi-finals (19.7%)
‧ Reach Finals (9.3%)
‧ Win Euro 2020 (5.8%)
Joachim Low’s German squad has seen better days – a poor 2018 World Cup campaign plus a horrendous Nations League campaign. And as time marches forward, the German squad has had to look towards younger talents such as AS Monaco striker, Kevin Volland, and Bayern Munich teenager, Jamal Musiala. With the inclusion of experienced names such as Thomas Muller, Mat Hummels and Toni Kroos.
While the new German squad comprises more youth and barely resembles the winning squad that won the 2014 World Cup, the squad will definitely be looking to recapture their glory days with forward Timo Werner looking to prove his worth in Germany.
These are their numbers:
‧ Reach Quarter-finals (45.4%)
‧ Reach Semi-finals (34.5%)
‧ Reach Finals (22.5%)
‧ Win Euro 2020 (9.3%)
Once the dominant forces of European football – with victories in Euro 2008, Euro 2012, and the 2010 World Cup –La Rojas were famous for their ’tiki-taka’ style of play to overwhelm their opponents.
However, the Spanish squad now seem to be a shell of their former selves as they advance to the knockout stages by the skin on their teeth, having edged Slovakia 5-0 in a convincing performance of possession and passing.
Despite their possession figures of 85% and 76% against Poland and Sweden respectively, the Spanish squad seem to lack the assertion and intimidation once possessed by the winning squad of Carles Puyol, Sergio Ramos, and Sergio Busquets. In other words, the lack of a leadership figure in midfield and striker on Luis Enrique’s side means that the Spanish squad are unable to take advantage of their possession figures.
With only one goal from 29 shots, and inconsistent performances from Alvaro Morata and Gerard Moreno, Spain’s midfield have a lot of work to do if they are going to assert themselves as a serious contender for the championship.
Despite this, La Rojas is still brimming with talent in players like Rodri, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets; and their chances are looking quite good in comparison to most teams.
These are their chances:
‧ Reach Quarter-finals (81%)
‧ Reach Semi-finals (39.1%)
‧ Reach Finals (19.1%)
‧ Win Euro 2020 (12.9%)
Looking to bounce back from their disastrous 2018 World Cup campaign, the Azzurri have emerged stronger than ever winning ten games and not conceding a single goal. Plus, they have not even unleashed Federico Chiesa and Marco Varrati to their fullest just yet.
Their match against Switzerland was a telling sign that the Azzurri certainly has the depth and strength to win the tournament.
Instrumental to this reform is Roberto Mancini. Under his leadership, the Azzurri have found a perfect balance of offence and defence; the likes of Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci, and Gianluigi Donnarumma. Remember that Mancini has a wealth of experience and it has shown in the form of 29 consecutive wins with ten successive shut-outs.
The knockout stages will surely be a rollercoaster of emotions, but if Italy continue to play the game and not the occasion then there is every chance that the Euro championship will be theirs to bring home.
These are the chances for the Azzurri:
‧ Reach Quarter-finals (75.8%)
‧ Reach Semi-finals (29.5%)
‧ Reach Finals (13.2%)
‧ Win Euro 2020 (8%)
The Dutch squad, the Oranje, failed to qualify for the previous two major tournaments but are turning their fortunes around quickly in Euro 2020, starting with their superb Nations League performance by securing 19 of the maximum 24 points.
And an impressive showing with a 3-0 win over North Macedonia is just the icing on the cake for the Dutch team advancing to the knockout stages, with star players Donyell Malen and Memphis Depay working hand in hand to achieve their 2-0 victory in Austria. A strong indicator from Frank De Boer’s side that the Dutch squad is working harmoniously, despite the notable lack of defence in the absence of players such as Virgil van Dijk, Myron Boadu, Justin Kluivert and Mohamed Ihattaren.
‧ Reach Quarter-finals (74.8%)
‧ Reach Semi-finals (48.6%)
‧ Reach Finals (24.1%)
‧ Win Euro 2020 (8.5%)
